Plant development

plantdevLight is not only substrate of photosynthesis but also an important signal for development. One of the best known and characterised photoreceptors is phytochrome, which triggers signals that control important aspects of plant development. Plastids and mitochondria can display special modes of inheritance in the sense that they can be excluded from certain types of generative cells, resulting in uniparental inheritance. The underlying molecular mechanisms are just beginning to emerge.
